the second week of the new year my mom and i travelled to iceland for a week. My mom was going to attend a geological conference, and i came with. i was just so happy to finally visit iceland! it was amazing, despite short days and storm and snow and rain and heavy clouds. it was still as incredible as i had imagined it, and it made me want to visit again so i could see it all without snow as well!

these photos are from our first day in iceland, where we took a tour down the south shore, past the volcanoes Eyjafallajökull and Katla and down to the small town of Vík. as you can see the weather didn't change much, only the light.

the year that now has passed was pretty eventful for me. here is a big post with photos i intended to post before during this year but somehow forgot.

the first half of this year i spent at krabbesholm school in denmark.

the first few weeks i was sick on and off with colds and strep throat. so my roomie brought me breakfast.

when the summer was coming to an end, my mom and i drove from denmark back home to tromsø, a drive that took about two days.

when summer ended i moved to oslo to study molecular biology and bio chemistry at oslo university. officially moving away from home.

one day, when tired of studying for exams, i took a walk around sognsvann, a lake just outside oslo. everything was covered in snow and a frosty mist hung over the frozen lake.

for christmas it was only me, my mom and findus, and a tiny christmas tree i named herman.

i visited my mom at the airport before she left for a week in san francisco (without me! damn you exams). took these photos on the bus on my way back this morning. i need to travel out of town a bit more often, i love the norwegian country side.

sorry for all the instagram photos lately, but it's just so convenient! the other day i was down town to buy christmas presents and i went to the harbor and the sun was setting. it was so beautiful and i had to take these pictures.

i'm now finished with biology, i had my exam this friday. now it's going to be all math and chemistry until the 16th!
not much else to tell really, since all i do these days is studying and eating and sleeping hah. though i haven't done enough of the latter, so i'm pretty exhausted.

this weekend

1. say hello to my "roommate" - a bonsai tree named mr. hannibal bonsai. for some reason it looked like a hannibal to me.
2. received two copies of a book in the mail, with my photo on the cover.
3. eggs and toast for breakfast.
4. only part of my shelf that looks nice lately (the rest of my shelf is messy with papers from school and things i don't know where else to put). cup hand made by me - hence the crookedness...

i also became desperate to remember all i've learned in biology before my exam, so i made the phylogenetic tree for the plant kingdom on my wall... now i'm working on one for the invertebrates.

and when i'm not studying or staring blankly into the air, i watch sci-fi movies. in case you didn't know, i love sci-fi. especially if it involves space and/or aliens. sounds silly but i just love the feeling of the unknown, and how the universe - so endlessly big - can feel so claustrophobic. how humans are small and helpless out there, and how, when you think about it, the universe isn't made for life. we're just really really lucky. and if there's something we know very little about, it's the universe and the future. so i watched 2001: a space odyssey the other day and i had to take screen-caps because it was so beautifully made.

i sometimes feel like i've lost the ability to express myself properly with words. i've often wanted to write a proper blog post about everything and nothing, but when i sit with the blank space before me and my fingers on the keyboard, i can't find anything to write. but i'll try now, one sentence at a time.

i haven't been active much with blogging or photography lately. university came and stole all my time and left me standing without motivation and inspiration. or when i do get bursts of inspiration, i can't do anything about it because i have so much work i have to do. they say the first year is the hardest, and that it will get better, so i hope i survive that long. some days i think molecular biology is the perfect subject to me, other times not.

i feel this post is starting to sound a bit depressing, which wasn't the purpose. sure university is hard, but i get to feel smart sometimes! like explaining the life cycle of angiosperms and gymnosperms, and try to learn to pronounce "actinopterygii" and "pertomyzontida", and if youre curious about how fungus reproduces sexually, i'm the person to ask! oh joy. can't wait for exams to be over, then i'll have almost a month of winter vacation.

oh! i'm travelling to iceland after new years. my mom is going to a conference there and taking me with her. i'm really excited. it'll be dark and cold but it's still iceland.

oslo is a fine city. every day i look out the window and it lookes different each time. my view has replaced tv. i wonder when the first snow will fall. its funny to me that there was a snowstorm in new england weeks before it started snowing in tromsø.

oh and something "hilarious": i spilled tea on my mac so now the "=/zero" and the "@"-button doesnt work. i had to google "equal sign" and "at sign" and copy paste them in here...

oh and another "funny" thing: i bought an iphone and after a few days it turned out something was wrong with the screen. so now i have to wait about 1-2 weeks for them to check it, before i either get the same phone back or a replacement. maybe it's all a sign, that i should either a) not touch apple products, or b) stick with the phone i've had for 7 years for yet another 7 years.

just got a film from late summer/early fall developed. i need to get hold of some black tape so i can control the crazy light leaks my camera makes. sorry for not posting in a while, but i've been so busy with university that i've hardly picked up my camera. which makes me sad to think about, so i hope i can change that soon.

hello, and sorry for my silence. i have a couple of posts planned of my vacation in denmark and our drive through sweden but i haven't organized all my photos yet so they will come a bit sporadically and not chronological.
this week, from monday to wednesday, i was in oslo with my mom to fix a couple of things before i move down there. so now i have a small dorm room, on the tenth floor with an amazing view over oslo. i'm really excited to move in, the only downside is that it is unfurnished, so i need to go furniture shopping. we also walked around like tourists, visiting the norwegian folk-museum and my moms big wish to see the fram-museum.

walking through oslo was a bit strange. there were heaps of flowers and broken and boarded windows from the blast everywhere. you kept thinking about what terrible thing had happened here. it was really moving to see how many flowers people had put to pay their respects. my thoughts have been with the families who have lost a loved one every day.

last days

there is only about 5 days left of my stay here at krabbesholm. which means the days are hectic, planning the final exhibition, printing, last minute photographing. i've also started packing. it's a really strange feeling, the life i've lived the past 5 months is soon over. in other news, i've signed a contract for a room in oslo! so i'll most likely be living in oslo after the summer.

last week i did two shoots for my final project. they turned out pretty good and i can't wait to show you! however, my external hard disk is full so i can't really edit them properly yet. but here are some behind the scenes photos.

after the first shoot, i learned the painful way that i'm slightly allergic to mosquito bites. the photo doesn't really do them justice, and it was taken when the swelling had gone a bit down, but i had golf- and tennis ball sized mosquito bites all over my legs, and it was so swollen that it hurt more than it itched. for the second shoot i definitely remembered mosquito repellent.

i'll be staying in denmark this summer. which is nice and relaxing and just what i need. what are you doing this summer?

about a week ago our photography class went on a short field trip to london. we spent four busy days visiting one gallery after the other. it was a really nice, though exhausting, trip, and i got to see a lot of london, though not all the things i wanted to see, time flew by so fast. hopefully i'll visit there again someday soon.

at the train station, on our way to down town london. our flight was two hours delayed because of a thunderstorm over copenhagen, and the graphic design class from our school who were going to iceland, had to go to berlin instead because of the volcano.

this morning i left tromsø to go back to krabbesholm. the trip took 12 hours. i left at 6am and arrived at 6pm. flying itself didn't take more than 4 hours all together (three flights), it was the waiting that took most of the time.
when i got up at 4.30am i looked out the window and this was what i saw:

behind that wall of late-april snow, i can usually look over to the other island, straight at the airport. luckily tromsø airport is used to snow at odd times (including june) so it didn't delay us more than half an hour.

but now i'm back at krabbesholm with a massive headache and completely exhausted. it's nice though, and here everything is fresh green, instead of white. i was told that for the rest of this week i have architecture instead of photography, which will be interesting since i know nothing about it.

for easter i've been home in tromsø. it's strange to be back home, because i realize my life is so much different now than it was when i lived here. though it is nice to finally relax a little at home, sleeping in and slopping in front of the tv, eating chocolate. i've really missed being home and it's been nice to see my mom and cat and friends again.

if your monday is as grey and rainy as mine, i suggest a cup of tea and a good book. i've just started reading "the book thief" by markus zusak. it seems to be a pretty good book, anyone who's read it? did you like it?

our neighbors cat, who also is our cat findus' best friend, has had kittens while i was away. now they are small balls of fur who don't stand still for a second.

three days in copenhagen

from monday to wednesday, my photography class had a field trip to copenhagen to set up our exhibition and visit galleries.

the first day was spent on setting up the exhibition. it took from 1pm to 9pm to organize the photos and hang them up. it was a long and exhausting day, also because i had spent the entire morning traveling from the school to copenhagen, a 5 and a half hour train ride.

the second day we walked around copenhagen all day, visiting galleries and parks and small cozy cafés.

the third and final day was the opening of the exhibition. before that we wandered around copenhagen, visiting shops and more galleries. the opening went really well, and friends i hadn't seen in years stopped by, which was really nice. the exhibition is at toves galleri on vesterbrogade in copenhagen, and is open till the 27th, if you want to see it.

one of our assignments was to find a photo we liked and in some way do a remake of it. you could either choose to copy the entire image, or take an element you liked and try to remake that. i chose a photo by sally mann, and the element i especially like is the girls intense look, which is what i tried to capture in my photo as well.

last week we had a product photographer named mikkel strange visiting here at krabbesholm. we were divided into groups and each got an object made of ceramic that we had to photograph, and my group got a christmas tree star. here are some photos from one of the shoots we did, where we ended up choosing the bottom left photo as our final piece.

so, i've now spent three weeks here at krabbesholm, where i'm taking a 6 month photography course. out of those three weeks, i've been sick on and off for the last two. but still, i'm having a great time. i live with a roomie in a room that is completely red and pink, with some purple and orange here and there. i'll show pictures of it some other time, but here are some other photos i've taken so far:

i spent christmas at my grandmothers place in copenhagen. christmas eve came and i ended up with a couple of lovely presents and ate a lot of food. after a few days in copenhagen (i was disappointed i didn't have the time to see the center of copenhagen, only drive through it) we went back to århus. then it was my birthday and i got some more lovely presents and ate some more food.

today we left århus for hulsig, a really small town south of skagen. there is hardly a soul here, though there are some sights to see.

flying in over denmark, just before landing, i could see that everything was covered in snow. it was early afternoon and the sun was low, and driving from the airport to århus i felt the need to take pictures all the way. i love taking pictures out the window, it makes the trip go so much faster and there is a lot to see along the road. despite just getting my drivers licnense (yay!) i enjoy the passenger seat for that reason. also, it was the first time seeing the sun for weeks and it was all very pretty in the sunlight.

so this year i spoiled myself by buying a canon 5d mark ii. also i was spoiled by my parents who got me a 50mm f/1.4 lens for early christmas/birthday present (my birthday is december 27 so i tend to get combined presents. i can't complain.)

other than that, i've been pretty stressed lately. so far i have bought none of the christmas presents i'm supposed to buy. i have a ton of work to do and i have to pack and clean the house. my driving test is soon too. i just really hope everything works out.

the next couple of weeks will be pretty busy for me. i'll have my final driving test and i'll be moving to denmark to attend a photography school that lasts around 6 months. i'm already excited and nervous about both. i also had plans for going to oslo this fall/winter, but because of all the driving lessons i've had to take i haven't had the time. which is very disappointing. i kind of miss the big city, hopefully i'll get to spend some time in copenhagen during christmas.

so i just felt like writing about a really interesting movie i saw the other day: "Talk to her", or the original title, "Hable con ella" by Pedro Almodóvar. those of you who have seen an Almodóvar film, know that they are quite original, and often a bit "strange", in the lack of a better word. of course in a good way (at least that is my opinion). and this movie is no exception.
well, "Hable con ella" is about two men who meet because they both have women they love who are in a coma. the movie goes back and forth in time a lot, and by that gives you a clear image of their relationships. i fell in love with the overall mood of the film, and also the fact that they speak spanish. i definitely recommend you watching it, especially if you are into films that are a bit different or if you are just tired of all the mainstream and often shallow hollywood films.

okay, so i have gotten quite a few questions about synesthesia. for those who don't know, i'm pretty sure i have something called synesthesia, which is a "neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway" according to wikipedias definition. which, in my case, is that i associate numbers, letters and names with colors, and can "feel" and "see" colors.
if i for example see the letter C, i see and feel the color yellow, and the number 3 is green, and the name Lauren is peach colored. odd numbers are uncomfortable color combinations, mostly green, white and orange combined, meaning i get an uncomfortable feeling from it. so i'm not that fond of odd numbers. and even numbers are soft colors like dark blue, purple and red. yellow is also an uncomfortable color, and it is shaped like a ball with long, cone shaped spikes.
i guess this sounds a bit strange. i didn't know experiencing this was unusual, i though everyone else did too. i figured out i most likely had it when we read an article about synesthesia in my english class and it pretty much described what i experienced. everyone talked about how strange it was. the funny thing was that only a few days before i had started suspecting that maybe not everyone experienced seeing colors like i did. i heard a name on the tv and asked my mom that "wasn't it strange that some names are yellow?" and she just looked at me like i was crazy.

it's not like i see a clear, and long lasting color inside my head. it is more like with dream that seems very clear when you dream it, but the minute you wake up you can hardly remember anything, no matter how hard you try. you can still feel the feeling you got from the dream, but you can't see or remember anything from it. well, that's how i sometimes experience synesthesia. when i see the letter, i see the color flash in my head, but when i try to think of the color, it is sometimes impossible to remember it, i only remember the feeling the color gave me. sometimes i can remember the color, other times not. not sure why, but it varies. so if you ask me for the color of your name for example (many people have) i can't necessarily answer you.
so, i don't know if this makes much sense. but maybe when you read this, you'll realize you might have synesthesia too? i only found out by a coincidence, if i hadn't read that article i probably wouldn't be aware of there being anything called synesthesia.

oh how lovely, it is snowing and raining and windy outside and i have to walk altogether 2,5 miles to the store and back to get dinner.
good news is that i had my final big math test today, which means i don't have to think about it anymore. otherwise not much has happened. oh i need to fix my graduation pants soon, and when i have i'll take a picture and show you and it will be like nothing you have ever seen before, haha.

book recommendation

i just finished reading this book:

it's a danish book, hence the danish title "kunsten at græde i kor", in english "the art of crying" by erling jepsen. i loved it. it is horrible and adorable at the same time. horrible because it is about incest, but adorable because it is written from an 11-year old boy's perspective. he doesn't understand what is wrong with his sister lying on the couch with their father at night, it always makes him feel better afterwards anyway. his father also attends funerals to speak, because his speeches touch people and make them cry and that too makes him happy. so when his father seems down, a death in the small town would be convenient.
the story is set in southern denmark, around the 1960s.
i definitely recommend you reading this. it has also been made into a film, which i think is close to being equally as good.

sorry, i'm not that great on updating my blog! anyway, it is easter holidays now which has been much needed. as usual i end up pretty much doing nothing during the day. though i have been working on my website/blog-made-to-look-like-a-website, but i still have quite a bit to do before i can call it finished. oh and i've been reading harry potter and the deathly hallows, so i haven't been much online either, i have been picking up the book instead of my mac a lot lately when i have been bored. but i've finished it and now i'm not sure what to read. any suggestions?

I am so sleepy lately. Just today i fell asleep on the couch when i got home from school, and i hardly ever sleep during the day. But now it is late and i still have a bunch of homework but maybe i should prioritate sleep. Also, it is extremely cold both outside and inside. That is why i sleep with three thick blankets.

Okay, so no i'm leaning more towards taking a year off and going to krabbesholm, the photography school. Reason for that is that my mom talked about maybe having a job for me that involves me going to the netherlands and doing lab work sometime during that year! And one of the main reasons for me taking a year off would be to go somewhere new and meet new people, which i would get to by going to krabbesholm as well. And since i want to go to the university afterwards and study something science-y, i think some lab work in the netherlands will only be a positive experience. I have to admit i am pretty excited now.

Okay i just realized this post turned out a bit long. Proof that i take too many photos. But seeing as a photo says more than a 1000 words, i won't write much.
Today was the last of the two days i spent at the university. We got do an experiment on a piece of rat intestine, and got to see the seals again. We fed them yesterday, and the reindeer as well. I'd only brought my disposable camera, so i don't have them to post.

So the highlight of today was when i went in one of our closets with old clothes, looking for an old sweater i couldn't find. Instead of actually finding the sweater i was looking for, i found a bunch of other exciting things:

cow-patterned tights i actually used to wear when i was like, 10 (the amazing/freaky thing was that they actually fit!):

i was particularly excited about these two dresses (they look better in real life):

and two sweaters my grandmother knitted for me when i was like, 12. But they are still wearable, because they were a bit too big for me back then:

other smaller highlights were drinking coffee and reading. I have a cool coffee cup. Take a break with Paddington!

The last one was to show you my t-shirt and make you envious! I love t-shirts, you can find so many with interesting prints on. Anyway, these were the result of me being bored. I have a gazillion photos from that boring friday afternoon. I simply take too many photos! And no, they are not all of myself, most of them are of my silly cat. I am just a bored teenager, that is all.
Yes, yesterday proved to me that i have no life. I was home all day, either on the computer, reading or watching tv. All my friends were busy with stuff, like studying for our math test that i won't have to take because i will be going to the university for two days next week. I'm actually pretty excited, i am one of the few who get to go. My first wish was to go to the department for medical biology, but that one was very popular and they only had room for two students, so i didn't get to go there. But i'll be going to the department for arctic biology. They have a bunch of reindeer and muskox walking around there. Though i think i'll just be following scientists around and see how they work.
Now i just walked in a snowstorm to the grocery store. At one point it started hailing and it was pretty cold (i ended up looking like some small snow monster!) but i did get some fresh air and some chocolate pudding!

Hi.

So this is my first post on this blog. Here I'll be posting a bit of everything: what is going on in life, outtakes, photos of mine that i don't put much/any thought into, features, ramblings, writings, drawings. I guess i was inspired to have somewhere to post all this. Otherwise it will just rot away in my head/notebooks/folders/external hard drive and whatnot.
I hope you'll bear with me.
